John Terry breaks silence as odds of becoming Swansea City manager tumble

John Terry has left his role at Aston Villa – and is now odds-on favourite to fill the managerial vacancy at Swansea City.

Terry, 40, today confirmed his departure from Villa after joining the coaching staff in October 2018.

The ex-England and Chelsea skipper assisted manager Dean Smith in helping the Midlands club reach the Premier League, survive there and then finish comfortably in mid-table last term.

His exit coincides with the uncertainty at Swansea, who are scratching around to find a new manager after seeing their top target, John Eustace, perform a u-turn over the weekend.

The Championship side last week parted company with Steve Cooper after two seasons in which he led them to successive play-off campaigns.

It was widely expected that QPR assistant Eustace would take over. It seemed almost certain he would be unveiled over the weekend but at the 11th hour the move broke down.

Our colleagues at Wales Online say the u-turn was due to personal reasons.

Terry's departure from Villa has now seen him instantly become the favourite for the Liberty Stadium role. Skybet chalk his odds up at 1/4.

But, after his exit was confirmed, he gave a hint as to potentially what's next.

He said: "It has always been my ambition to move into football management and, providing the right opportunity presents itself, I feel ready to take up such a challenge.

"I want to be as respectful to the manager and everyone at Aston Villa as I can. Having given my future serious consideration over the summer, I don't feel it is fair to move into a new season without being certain of seeing that through.

"My immediate plan is to spend some quality time with my family and, thereafter, hopefully take up some invitations to visit clubs and managers around Europe to develop my aim and objective of becoming a manager."

Smith said: "I'm disappointed to lose John as part of my coaching staff but fully understand and respect his decision.

"John has played a huge role in the success the club has enjoyed over the past few years and has been very supportive of myself throughout that period.

"I have no doubts he will go on to be a first-class manager in his own right and wish him well for the future."
