John Terry asked about Champions League group memories and gives knockout answer
For all his positive attributes, listening may not be one of John Terry's strong suits.
The Chelsea legend was a special guest during Monday's Champions League last-16 draw despite his old club not being involved in Europe this season. Terry, 43, joined the ceremony as a past winner of the competition, clinching continental honours in 2012 after finishing as a runner-up four years prior.
But the ex-England captain boasts huge Champions League experience, lining up in the group stage of almost every campaign throughout his stay at Stamford Bridge. Despite having all that context in the tournament's opening round, however, Terry got his cues completely wrong when asked to recall some of his favourite group-stage memories.

"I think for me personally, playing against Barcelona in 2004/05," replied the Blues icon, having seemingly not taken in what was actually asked. "In my generation I feel Barcelona was the best team that I've ever faced and had some of the best players in the world.
"So playing against those players and testing yourself – which was very difficult at times – was great memories. And on that occasion we managed to win, so [it] leaves a good memory in the brain."

That answer would have been fine and well were it not for the fact Chelsea's 2005 meeting with Barcelona took place in the round of 16. The Blues lost 2-1 at the Camp Nou before winning the second leg 4-3 at Stamford Bridge, with Terry himself wrapping up the comeback to complete a 5-4 aggregate win.
In their first season under Jose Mourinho, the west London giants won both the Premier League and League Cup crowns. However, their Champions League quest ended with a 1-0 semi-final defeat to Liverpool, who went on to celebrate one of football's greatest comebacks when they beat AC Milan in Istanbul weeks later.

One who might have spotted Terry's gaffe was ex-Barca playmaker Deco, who sat in the Nyon crowd after being appointed sporting director for his old club earlier this year. The Portugal legend played every minute during that last-16 tie almost two decades ago and will likely remember it for very different reasons.
Perhaps one can't blame Terry for getting his wires crossed considering the catalogue of Champions League moments he enjoyed over the course of his career. The former skipper was accustomed to barking orders at the peak of his career, but a little more practice in the listening department now he's retired may not go astray.
