Liverpool legend John Barnes has raised concerns over Steven Gerrard’s credentials to be the Reds’ next manager. Gerrard is the favourite to replace Jurgen Klopp if and when the German decides to call it a day at Anfield. The former England midfielder has had three seasons in management at Rangers since being appointed in the summer of 2018.

Gerrard led Rangers to their first title in 10 years last season.

Gers finished 25 points clear of Old Firm rivals Celtic and went the entire league campaign unbeaten.

However, Barnes doubts if the Liverpool job would suit Gerrard anytime soon.

The former England winger would prefer Gerrard to get more experience under his belt before being targeted by the Reds.

Barnes instead would prefer to see Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola take over if Klopp was to leave.

Asked who he’d want to replace Klopp, Barnes told bettingodds.com: “Pep Guardiola.

“Of course there are other managers that you would think are better suited, such as Steven Gerrard who has had a very good season at Rangers, but is he going to come to Liverpool off the back of one good year?

“Of course he would be given time because of his relationship with Liverpool.

“If you were to ask me now, if Jurgen Klopp left Liverpool tomorrow would I think Steven was the man for the job? Probably not because you would want a manager with more experience and is proven at the highest level.

“He would be given time because he’s Steven Gerrard, but would that be the right thing for Liverpool? Maybe not.

“I’m sure Steven will do really well over the course of his career, but he’s going to have to show a longer level of consistency over a longer period of time before we start linking him with the Liverpool job.”

Speaking earlier this year, Gerrard’s friend and former team-mate Jamie Carragher also felt the timing would have to be right for the 41-year-old to get the Liverpool job.

“I’d love to see him as Liverpool manager one day,” Carragher told The Sportsman.

“I think everyone at the club would love that. But we’d all want that when Stevie was fully-equipped and fully ready because we’d want him to be successful, obviously.

“So, that’s not to say he shouldn’t be the next manager but I think management is all about timing.”
