Joe Gomez labelled ‘worst defender in football’ as Liverpool man has horror show

Joe Gomez was savaged by Liverpool fans for his performance in their 5-2 Champions League defeat to Real Madrid.

The Reds saw the opening leg of their round-of-16 tie flipped on its head after they'd gone two to the good early on at Anfield. Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah's goals were cancelled out by a Vinicius Junior brace, with Gomez failing to close him down for his first.

The centre-back then conceded a free-kick from which Real took the lead less than two minutes into the second half, before Karim Benzema's strike deflected off him and past Alisson for their fourth of the night.

During his 73 minutes on the pitch before being substituted with a suspected hamstring injury, he won zero tackles, made zero blocks and lost possession six times – and that left him at the mercy of Liverpool supporters online.

One claimed: "Gomez is the worst defender in football." Another echoed: "One of the worst defenders out there."

What changes should Jurgen Klopp make for the second leg? Let us know in the comments section below

One argued: "Joe Gomez should never start for us again and be shipped off as soon as the transfer window opens. Horrific player."

"If Joe Gomez isn’t playing for Aston Villa next season next to Tyrone Mings something has gone wrong," commented one, and another similarly wrote: "Can Gomez just go to Crystal Palace where he belongs man I’m tired."

"He hasn't been the same since that long term injury," said one, while one added: "Not been good enough for a long time now had a shocker tonight."

One asked: "Explain to me how he’s still a Liverpool player." And one blasted: "Joe Gomez is abysmal. He’s single-handedly lost us this game. I can’t believe it. I feel sorry for him, but I’m fuming."
