Joe Cole has revealed that Chelsea decided against signing Sergio Aguero because of “his shape” during his time at the club. The former England attacker has shed light on how the Blues turned down the chance to bring the Argentine to Stamford Bridge, a decision they would soon live to regret.

Two years later, Aguero would seal a £35million move to the Etihad Stadium. The rest is history.

Aguero leaves City as their all-time record goalscorer having won five Premier League titles.

Tonight he will be looking to sign off by winning the Champions League trophy before his move to Barcelona this summer.

Chelsea were said to be amongst the names in contention to sign Aguero as his City contract trickled down and it’s not the first time they’ve weighed up a move for the 32-year-old.

Cole revealed on BT Sport: “Do you know what’s interesting Gary, Chelsea actually passed on him.

“I think they looked at his shape, I think he scored a wonderful goal against us in the Champions League for Atletico Madrid.

“You know as a player, I was playing against him and I thought ‘wow!”.

“He was up against JT [John Terry] and Ricardo Carvalho and was just outstanding.

“Because of his shape, which was obviously a huge mistake looking back at the time, they passed on him.”

The Athletic actually report that one of the reasons why Chelsea didn’t sign Aguero was due to John Terry.

It’s said that the former Blues captain had a lot of power in the dressing room and behind the scenes at Stamford Bridge.

So much so, that the board would consult him over signings and Terry allegedly wasn’t keen on Aguero.

Instead, Terry hoped Chelsea would land Spain’s danger man David Villa. A request that fell upon deaf ears.

No forward would arrive besides Daniel Sturridge, who joined from Manchester City in 2009.

Aguero’s former Atletico Madrid striker partner Diego Forlan later claimed that his former team-mate should have opted to join Chelsea and not Man City.

It was no real surprise to see him leave, but I thought it would have been to a different club,” Forlan told the People.

“Chelsea’s game and squad are more suited to his style. And of course, I am a Manchester United fan, so his decision to move to City is also painful for me.”
