Joe Cole compares Chelsea’s £88m signing Mykhailo Mudryk to his former team-mate Arjen Robben… as he predicts the Ukrainian will ‘get better and better’ but will ‘need time to settle’ into life at Stamford Bridge
- Chelsea signed Mykhailo Mudryk for £88m during the January transfer window
- The Blues spent a staggering £323m in January to strengthen their squad
- Joe Cole says he’s ‘excited’ by Mudryk and compared him to Arjen Robben
Joe Cole has compared Chelsea’s new £88m signing Mykhailo Mudryk to his former team-mate Arjen Robben.
The 22-year-old was one of eight signings made by the Blues during the January transfer window, as the Blues spent a staggering £323m.
Mudryk is yet to start a game since his arrival, but he showed Chelsea fans glimpses of what might be to come in the draws against both Liverpool and Fulham.
‘He’s going to be a top player for Chelsea,’ Cole told BT Sport ahead of Saturday’s fixture with London rivals West Ham.
Cole went on to make the comparison with Robben, while also insisting the Ukrainian will get better and better at Chelsea once he learns how to play under Graham Potter.

‘Mudryk looks a fantastic final third player who can beat a man, excite the crowd and has great feet.
‘He reminds me of Arjen Robben in the way he drives past players in short bursts and makes the right decisions in the final third.
‘I think he’s going to get better and better so Chelsea have got him at the right time.
‘He just needs to settle. It’s a big jump coming from Ukraine to the Premier League so they’ll need to give him some time but I’m really excited about him once he learns to play under Potter.’
The comparison to Robben is big praise for the youngster, who scored ten goals in 18 appearances for Shakhtar Donetsk this season before his switch to the Premier League.
Robben enjoyed success at Chelsea, Real Madrid and in particular, Bayern Munich where he played for ten seasons.
Cole is not the only player to compare Mudryk to Robben, as Steven Gerrard also made the comparison following his cameo against Liverpool.
Chelsea beat Arsenal at the 11th hour to the transfer, with Shakhtar preferring the financial package put together by the Blues.
Cole offered warning though that Mudryk will need time to settle to life at Stamford Bridge
Mudryk is yet to start for the Blues but made lively cameos against Liverpool and Fulham
The Ukrainian could be set to make his first start for Chelsea when they travel to the London Stadium for Saturday’s early kick-off.
The Blues are in desperate need of a positive result as they currently sit ninth in the Premier League – ten points outside the Champions League spots.
Cole, while speaking to BT Sport ahead of Saturday’s London clash, also added that the ‘clock is ticking’ on Declan Rice’s career and that every top club except Real Madrid will be looking to sign him.
