Barcelona president Joan Laporta insists Ousmane Dembele is a better player than Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappe.

Laporta made the bold claim when he was asked about the future of Dembele – who is out of contract at the Nou Camp at the end of the season.

Laporta revealed he was confident that the World Cup winner would sign a new deal with Barcelona as the club have a ‘very good relationship’ with the 24-year-old.

Speaking about Dembele’s future at Barcelona, Laporta said it was only a matter of time until he signs a new contract with the Catalans.

‘We have a very good relationship with Dembele and he wants to stay,’ Laporta told TV3. ‘We also want him to stay because he’s a great player.

‘These situations need negotiations with representatives who want the best for the player. I’m enthusiastic about Dembele. He’s a better player than Kylian Mbappe’.

However, Sportsmail previously revealed that Dembele had no interest in signing fresh terms with Barcelona and that he had already rejected offers of a new contract.

As a result, Newcastle – who are backed by the incredible riches of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund – tabled an ‘astronomical offer’ for Dembele – according to Mundo Deportivo.

The Premier League side presented their opening offer to Dembele last month. It was said to equate to €15million (£12.73m) a year in wages as well as a hefty bonus for moving to St James’ Park.

Liverpool are also said to be in the running to sign Dembele as Jurgen Klopp is looking to bolster his attacking options next summer after failing to recruit a new forward in the summer.

However, the Liverpool boss may look to sign Dembele in the January window, given he will be without Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane during the Africa Cup of Nations.

As it stands, there are just 29 days until Dembele can begin formal negotiations with a view to entering a pre-contract agreement.
