Joachim Low 'begged Jamal Musiala to snub England and pick Germany'

REVEALED: Joachim Low ‘turned up on Jamal Musiala’s doorstep in Munich to beg him to snub England and represent Germany’ before 18-year-old Bayern starlet opted to reject the Three Lions, despite starring in their youth ranks

  • Joachim Low went to Jamal Musiala’s home to convince him to pick Germany
  • Musiala, 18, declared for Germany last month despite being an England junior
  • Low offered Musiala a clear path into the Germany side ahead of Euro 2020

Germany head coach Joachim Low launched a huge charm offensive to convince teenage star Jamal Musiala to ditch England and represent Germany.

Low even went as far as turning up on the 18-year-old’s doorstep to talk him into switching allegiances, according to the Times.

Musiala is one of the hottest teenage prospects in European football who has just signed his first professional contract with German giants until 2026.

The attacking midfielder joined Bayern’s Under-17s from Chelsea in 2019, and last month made the surprising decision to declare for Germany in his future international career, despite having represented England at both Under-17 and Under-21 level.

Musiala pledged his future to his country of birth, and not England – despite saying he has an ‘English heart’ and starring for the youth ranks.

Low’s influence was crucial in Musiala’s decision, as Germany had reportedly given on him in November, according to  the German FA’s (DFB) head of academy coaching, Meikel Schonweitz.

Musiala, 18, has represented England at both Under-17 and Under-21 level but chose Germany

‘He (Musiala) has clearly signalled to us that he sees his future with the English national teams . . . We accept his decision,’ Schonweitz said, according to the Times.

But Low’s turning up on Musiala’s doorstep in Munich changed everything, with the Germany boss promising the attacker a clear path into the Germany first-time if he joined the squad ahead of Euro 2020.

Musiala has made 28 appearances so far for Bayern in all competitions and became their youngest ever scorer in the Champions League when he netted in their 4-1 win over Lazio last month.

The determination to recruit Musiala for Germany reflects Low’s focus on securing more creative attacking players ahead of Euro 2020, given Kai Havertz’s struggles in the Premier League and the likes of Julian Brandt not quite proving himself at the highest level.
