Sir Jim Ratcliffe has reportedly rejected an offer to buy Liverpool as he hopes to make an offer for Manchester United instead. The two Premier League rivals have recently been put up for sale and the British billionaire is seen as one of the most likely people to complete a deal for either side.

Ratcliffe has been widely reported to be interested in purchasing an English club for some time and had a £4.25 billion bid to buy Chelsea rejected earlier this year. He already has experience owning a football club having completed takeovers of Swiss club Lausanne-Sport in 2017 and French side Nice in 2019 alongside his company INEOS.

The chemical company also have many sports sponsorship including the New Zealand rugby while they are also the principal partners of the Mercedes F1 .

With Liverpool and United now on the market he had been widely tipped to launch a bid for at least one of the clubs and it appears he has chosen the Old Trafford side. French publication Foot Mercato reports that US bank Goldman Sachs offered him the chance to take hold of the keys to Anfield but he turned down the opportunity as he hopes to make an official offer for the Red Devils instead.

The 70-year-old initially expressed an interest in buying United in August if it was ever put up for sale. He has previously claimed to support the club but is a season ticket holder at Stamford Bridge. He is believed to be worth around £11.2bn after accumulating wealth through the success of INEOS.

United were put up for sale earlier this week with current owners the Glazers announcing they were exploring ‘strategic alternatives’. The sale will be overseen by the Raine Group bank with the club valued at around £7bn.

Former United captain Gary Neville has encouraged the Glazers to engage with the fans before completing the sale, suggesting it could help salvage their legacy.

“It’s a big moment now,” the ex-England full-back Neville told Sky Sports. “The Glazer family will never get a great exit from Manchester United, but they could have a more pleasant exit if they do it right.

“Over the next couple of months, I’d like to see them engage properly with the fans about who is going to take over the club.”

The Glazers are expected to talk to interested parties over the next month before drawing up a list of preferred replacements as the race to complete a takeover of the club intensifies.
