Jesus 'very close' to Arsenal move as Alexandre Lacazette joins Lyon

Arsenal step up efforts to sign Gabriel Jesus from Man City as gap in attack at the Emirates grows following Alexandre Lacazette’s decision to return to former club Lyon on a free transfer

  • Arsenal have stepped up their pursuit of Gabriel Jesus from Manchester City
  • The club are keen to land the Brazilian as a replacement for Alexandre Lacazette
  • The French attacker will join Lyon on a free transfer at the start of next season
  • The deal is reportedly ‘very close’ and expected to be ‘between €50-60million’

Arsenal are increasing efforts to sign Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesus after Alexandre Lacazette chose to return to Lyon.

Jesus, 25, has interest from Tottenham and reportedly ‘four other top sides’ but is keen to link up with Mikel Arteta despite Arsenal’s lack of Champions League football.

He scored for Brazil in a 5-1 win over South Korea yesterday and said: ‘I’m looking to see what’s best for me and above all, for my career.

Gabriel Jesus joined Manchester City for approximately £28million from Palmeiras in 2017

He won the Premier League for the fourth time in May having scored eight and assisted nine

‘From Tuesday, we’ll see what is the best.’

Lacazette was expected to leave after running down his contract and has agreed to rejoin Lyon where he made 275 appearances and scored 129 goals prior to a £46.5million transfer to Arsenal.

And Arsenal are reportedly ‘very close’ to luring Jesus to the Emirates, although they will be expected to fork over €50-60 million, according to Brazilian journalist Rodrigo Oliveira via Sport Witness.

Arteta is looking to revamp his attack while Eddie Nketiah is expected to sign a new five year contract despite interest from Leeds, Crystal Palace and West Ham.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta worked closely with the Brazilian as assistant manager at the Etihad

Nketiah, who was at one stage expected to leave the Emirates this summer, earned Arteta’s trust by scoring five goals in seven Premier League games at the end of the season.

Meanwhile, Jesus contributed 13 goals and 12 assists in 41 caps for Manchester City last campaign, although many of his appearances were as a substitute.

Having waved goodbye to both Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and now Lacazette 2022, Arsenal can convincingly offer the Brazilian a more regular guarantee of first-team football, even if they missed out on Champions League qualification.

For Jesus, it looks as though his minutes will only continue to fall at the Etihad, following Manchester City’s blockbuster signing of Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund last month.
