Southampton’s attempts to appoint Jesse Marsch as their new manager have broken down.
Talks between the two parties have collapsed after they were unable to reach an agreement over the terms of a contract for Marsch.
Marsch was in pole position to succeed Nathan Jones a week after leaving Leeds following talks with the south coast club.
Marsch impressed in those discussions and was ready to accept the role, undeterred by Southampton’s current predicament bottom of the Premier League table, four points from safety.
However, a contract to suit all parties remained an issue that needed resolving and they have been unable to reach a compromise following more discussions today.
Jesse Marsch will not be the new Southampton manager after talks over his deal broke down
Southampton sacked Nathan Jones on Sunday following a dismal run of results
The length of contract and how it would be structured was a sticking point given Southampton’s situation, with their Premier League future up in the air.
They were reluctant to commit to a long-term deal for Marsch while that remained the case though he was happy to pen one.
Southampton were instead only prepared to offer a short-term deal containing an option to extend.
Coach Ruben Selles has been taking training this week ahead of Saturday’s trip to Chelsea and the prospect of him doing well enough to put himself in contention for the job, even on a short-term basis, was one Southampton sources did not discount even as talks with Marsch were progressing.
And while Southampton weigh up where they may go next – if at all – Selles is now set to have the chance to enhance his claims when he leads the team at Stamford Bridge with one of their previous contingency plans now a genuine possibility again following developments with Marsch.
Southampton chiefs had already discussed the idea of Selles, 39, being in charge, supported by a more experienced coach.
Jones was sacked on Sunday, just three months into the job after winning just one of his eight league games in charge.
Selles previously had a spell in interim charge following Ralph Hasenhuttl’s departure and before Jones appointment in November, overseeing a Carabao Cup penalty shootout win against Sheffield Wednesday.
Marsch would have switched from one relegation fight at Leeds to another at Southampton
