Jesse Marsch warns his Leeds players not to ignore his instructions

‘We have to stay to the plan’: Jesse Marsch warns his Leeds players not to ignore his instructions against Norwich following midweek drubbing against Aston Villa

  • Leeds United were beaten 3-0 by Aston Villa at Elland Road on Thursday evening
  • The Whites are without a goal or a point in Jesse Marsch’s two games so far
  • Marsch has told his squad to stick to the game plan against Norwich on Sunday
  • The American says that he understands fans’ concerns after a sixth straight loss

Jesse Marsch has warned his Leeds players not to ignore his instructions for a second game running when they face Norwich City in a relegation showdown at Elland Road on Sunday.

The American was not happy with his side’s performance during Thursday’s 3-0 defeat by Aston Villa, his first home match in charge.

That sixth straight loss leaves Leeds two points above the drop zone and Marsch without a point or a goal in two games since his arrival.

Leeds manager Jesse Marsch says that his players need to stick to the plan against Norwich

He said: ‘We just started trying a bunch of things that we never talked about and we have to stay to the plan – we have to stay to the plan.

‘If we don’t do that then we’re weaker. We see the weaknesses of our players and not the strengths. So that will certainly be a message (ahead of Norwich).’

He added: ‘Most of the teams that I’ve managed over the years have scored a lot of goals.

‘Part of the reason we’re not scoring is because, when we get to the final third, there’s too many moments where players want to make something individually happen, instead of understanding how to stick to roles.’

The Whites are without a single goal or a point in Marsch’s two games in charge so far

Leeds supporters sang Marcelo Bielsa’s name during the defeat to Aston Villa on Thursday

For the first time this season the atmosphere inside the ground turned toxic as fans vented their feelings towards the directors’ box. They did not turn on Marsch but they sang the name of former manager Marcelo Bielsa in the wake of Villa’s third goal.

Marsch said: ‘I understand their frustration and concern. But again, the most important thing is the belief and the courage that we have as a club, as a city and as a community.

‘I know with the fans you have to earn it. It’s not given, right? It’s the same with players, the same with directors. But I’m not afraid. I’m here for the right reasons and I want to help this club be the things I really believe it can be.’
