Jesse Lingard has sparked speculation that he could be heading back to West Ham after he shared a social media post from the Irons just 10 minutes after Manchester United shared quotes from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, stating the attacking midfielder still has a part to play at Old Trafford. Contract talks between the Red Devils and Lingard are now believed to have completely collapsed with a permanent exit now on the cards, as he enters the final six months of his current deal.

Lingard excelled in the second half of last season under David Moyes while on loan at the London Stadium – providing 13 goal contributions (nine goals and four assists) in 16 Premier League matches.

Yet the Hammers were unable to agree a permanent transfer for Lingard as United dug their heels into the ground.

The club set a price-tag of around of around £30million for the England international, a figure West Ham were not prepared to pay for a player in the final 12 months of the deal.

Now Lingard has offered Irons supporters hope he could be eyeing a return to east London, after he shared a post from West Ham onto his Instagram story.

The post references the brace Lingard fired for West Ham on their last visit to Molineux as Moyes’ men prepare to face Wolves again this weekend in the Black Country.

Lingard re-shared the image shortly after Solskjaer declared he still sees the 28-year-old as an important part of his squad before United’s trip to Watford.

“In regards to contract situation, I’ve not been in them very closely,” Solskjaer said when quizzed on Lingard’s future.

“For me, Jesse is still a big part of this squad and important and he gives quality to the group every day. Every player wants to play as much as possible.”

Lingard’s involvement has been limited this season despite Solskjaer’s determination to keep him at Old Trafford.

He netted in the 4-1 demolition of Newcastle before also teeing up Cristiano Ronaldo for a stoppage-time Champions League winner against Villarreal.

Futhermore, Lingard also broke West Ham hearts on his return to the club, scoring a late winner against his former side.

Express Sport understands West Ham were close to pulling off a late deadline day deal for Lingard this summer before signing Nikola Vlasic from CSKA Moscow.

The idea a move could be revived when the transfer window reopens is not being ruled out.

United know Lingard wants to play regularly and that is unlikely to happen with Bruno Fernandes at the club.

This could be United’s last chance to earn a small fortune for Lingard, who could be made available for around £10m in January.

West Ham are not expected to spend heavily this winter although cover at centre-back for Angelo Ogbonna is now on the agenda after a scan revealed damage to his anterior cruciate knee ligament.
