Jamie Vardy rinses Tottenham after gatecrashing stage at BBC Radio 2 festival

Football Digest: Newcastle primed for Champions League return

Leicester forward Jamie Vardy brutally mocked Tottenham during a bizarre on-stage appearance at BBC Radio 2’s two-day In The Park festival. Vardy addressed the crowd less than 48 hours after scoring his first goal of the season for the Foxes against Southampton on Friday night.

The 36-year-old was clearly in a party mood as he grabbed a microphone and stood up in front of revellers at the festival, which is taking place at Victoria Park in Leicester. He was greeted by loud cheers from the crowd and started off by asking if there were any Tottenham supporters in attendance, which was met by a smattering of boos.

Nobody came forward to identify themselves in response, prompting Vardy to aim a dig at Spurs as he quipped: “Still got no bottle!” The former England striker went on to introduce Vernon Kay as the next act of the festival before leaving the stage to make way.

Tottenham have made an impressive start to the new Premier League campaign, with the north Londoners just two points behind early leaders Manchester City after their opening five matches. They were unable to escape being mocked by Vardy, though, with the veteran forward having gained a reputation for his cheeky antics throughout his career.

It came just two days after Vardy opened his account for Leicester inside the first minute against Southampton, with the Foxes cruising to a 4-1 victory on the south coast. The result saw Enzo Maresca’s side consolidate their position near the top of the Championship as they seek an immediate return to the Premier League at the end of the campaign.

Vardy found the back of the net after just 21 seconds when he slotted home inside the box after being picked out by Stephy Mavididi from the left. He celebrated in trademark fashion by goading the home supporters, with some reacting angrily in the stands after seeing their team go behind almost immediately after kick-off.

He went on to send an ominous warning to Leicester’s rivals in the Championship, insisting they will be powerless to prevent the Foxes from achieving their goals as they continue to make progress under new boss Maresca.

“We know how the manager wants us to play, we’re doing it in training every single day,” said Vardy. “The amount of chances we create when we’re playing against each other because of the way we’re playing, there’s nothing you can do about it. That’s how good it is.

“It’s a process. We’re learning every day and hopefully it’ll just keep getting better. We’ve got to keep improving. There’s bits we’ll take from tonight that we won’t be happy with. We’ve got to take that into Wednesday night now. We’ve got that many attacking players on the pitch, there’s going to be chances coming from every single angle.”
