Liverpool hero Jamie Carragher's son was carried off on a stretcher during Wigan's EFL Trophy clash against Shrewsbury on Wednesday following a heavy collision in a 50-50 challenge.

The 19-year-old defender joined Wigan from Liverpool as a youngster back in 2017, making his professional debut during their Carabao Cup win over Hull in August.

James, who is celebrating his 19th birthday on Thursday, fell to the ground after getting up from a tackle, calling for medical assistance from club staff.

Carragher signed his first professional contract before the current season begun, having captained the Latics' Under-18s to Professional Development League glory last time out.

Wigan are yet to offer an update, but Carragher's forced substitution was mentioned by goalscorer Adam Long after the 2-0 triumph.

Long said: “I thought we did very well.

“We started well, and it was disappointing to lose Carra through injury, but I thought Divin [Baningime] did very well when he came on.

“It’s always good to test yourself, especially for the younger lads against stronger, bigger opposition. That step up from the U23s is very beneficial for us all.

“I think it will do us the world of good. When we play against these types of opposition week in, week out, I feel like we can only get better from it.”

Earlier in the season, Carragher was praised by former England striker Kevin Phillips following his short performance in the aforementioned victory over Hull.

He told EFL on Quest: "(It's) incredible, just the way he tackles. It's great to see a young lad leaving a club like Liverpool because he wants to go and play football.

"Maybe there's a bit of influence from his dad, but you can just see there with his arm up (appealing) he looks like he's going to be a hot prospect.

"I'm really looking forward now to watching him develop over the years."

Carragher junior had said after signing his professional deal: “I’m very happy; I signed here when I was an under-14 and I’ve loved it here.

"From the minute I walked through the door I have thrived and improved as a player, so I can’t wait to carry that on."
