Jamie Carraghers son earns first pro contract – and gets message from proud dad
James Carragher earned his first professional contract on Wednesday morning with dad Jamie leaving a message for his 18-year-old son underneath the announcement.
Carragher Jr was named captain of Wigan Athletic's under-18 team last season and skippered the side as they became Professional Development League National Champions.
The young defender joined the Lactics at under-14 level having been released by Liverpool, where dad Jamie spent the entirety of his career.
It was a proud moment for the player turned pundit who left a heartwarming message for his son in reply to the announcement:
"Well done son, very proud of you," said Carragher Snr alongside three emojis of a football, a pen and a love heart.
James Carragher becomes the latest addition to the first team set-up, with the Lactics mixing youth and experience in the hope that last season was just a one off.
Wigan are set to start the 2021/22 campaign in League 1 having narrowly avoided relegation last time out.
The 2013 FA Cup winners looked destined to drop into the fourth division for the first time since 1982 but avoided League 2 by a single point with Rochdale occupying the final relegation spot instead.

To ensure next season is not a repeat of the previous 12 months, the board have recruited wisely, signing three players that spent time at play-off finalists Sunderland last season.
Wideman Jordan Jones, midfielder Max Power and League 1 top scorer Charlie Wyke have all been added from the north East club with sights firmly set further up the table.
