Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has backed Jurgen Klopp after the Reds boss blasted the festive fixture list.

Klopp has come in for criticism from some pundits after voicing his displeasure over the short break between Premier League games over Christmas.

Liverpool are set to resume their league campaign on the 28th of December following their late Carabao Cup heroics against Leicester City on Wednesday night. Ironically, Klopp’s men are due to travel to Leicester on the 28th before hosting title rivals Chelsea five days later.

But Klopp has still hit out at the authorities over the number of clubs who are due to play two league games in quick succession over the Christmas break – despite his side no longer being one of those affected by the quick turnaround.

He told Sky Sports: “The problem is, and will always be, there’s no reason for it. I have no problem with the Christmas games; Boxing Day is a wonderful game. Nobody wants to cancel that.

“Just 26th and 28th is absolutely impossible; it’s a joke that they still do it. [There is] no problem to play 26th and 29th.

“Where’s the problem? With the 28th not being a matchday, people can see their families. It’s still the shortest of all possible breaks, but fine. 26th and 28th is just not right, and we will say it all the time.”

His stance saw him slammed by talkSPORT host Alan Brazil – who called the Anfield chief “a numpty” for moaning about the ‘tradition’ of games coming thick and fast over the Christmas period.

But Carragher has sided with Klopp after wading in one the debate with a sarcastic tweet.

“Forget player welfare Jurgen you numpty, it’s good old British tradition!”

Despite scheduling issues dominating the narrative surrounding English football this week, a number of Boxing Day games have been axed due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

The new Omicron variant that has gripped the country has ravaged the festive football schedule – with over 20 games so far postponed due to positive cases.

Liverpool were due to host Leeds on Boxing Day, only for the clash to be called off after an outbreak in the Leeds camp.

There had been reports earlier this week that clubs were due to meet to discuss the possibility of scrapping the games immediately after Boxing Day; which would have seen fixtures on the 28th and 29th of December rearranged amid the rising cases of Covid.

But those plans were shelved, with clubs instead electing to proceed with the festive schedule as normal.
