Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool are ‘desperate’ after agreeing a £110m deal with Brighton for midfielder Moises Caicedo but insists the move is ‘great business’ by his former club.

Chelsea were favourites for the Ecuadorian’s signature before the Reds stunningly hijacked the move in an effort to improve their own midfield reserves.

Carragher’s remarks are a far cry from his damning assessment of Liverpool earlier in the week where he labelled Jurgen Klopp’s side as ’embarrassing’ due to their long-running pursuit of Southampton’s Romeo Lavia.

The former Liverpool defender was previously frustrated at his past club’s lack of transfer activity that has so far seen their midfield rebuild lacking in numbers before news of Caicedo began to emerge.

But, a buoyed Carragher is keen to issue praise where he thinks it’s deserved and appears impressed with Liverpool’s latest bit of business on the first day of the new Premier League season.

The 45-year-old posted on Twitter: ‘110M is a big price for Caicedo but Liverpool had to pay big as clubs knew they were desperate.

‘But signing two top young players for 145M & selling two of your older players for 52M is great business!’

All signs posted towards Caicedo joining Chelsea before Liverpool’s late intervention ensured the 21-year-old talent would be swapping Brighton for the north west in a huge blow to Mauricio Pochettino.

The Blues had been persisting in their pursuit of Caicedo throughout pre-season and there was belief a deal was close between the relevant parties prior to Liverpool entering negotiations.

However, Liverpool’s improved offer outranked Chelsea’s bid and the wages on offer at Anfield are likely to be more than the contract terms set out at Stamford Bridge.

Caicedo and his agent were in London on Thursday evening waiting to find out where the player would be heading as the bidding war dragged on.

The midfielder is expected to sign a long-term deal with Liverpool who will also break the Premier League transfer record formerly held by Chelsea after their £107m arrival of Enzo Fernandez in January.

Caicedo’s Chelsea snub will likely add more fuel to the fire when the two sides meet in London on Sunday for their opening Premier League clash.
