Jamie Carragher has named Manchester City maestro Kevin De Bruyne as the one player that he would love to sign for Liverpool. The 30-year-old has firmly established himself as one of the world’s best players during his time with the Premier League champions having played a key role at the Etihad Stadium since joining the club back in 2015.

The Belgian midfielder has won three Premier League titles and five League Cups with City and has chipped in with seven goals and four assists in all competitions since the beginning of the current campaign.

He has stolen the show against Liverpool on more than one occasion, scoring twice and setting up another five goals against the Reds throughout his career.

It would be almost impossible for Jurgen Klopp’s side to tempt City into selling De Bruyne, who remains under contract until the summer of 2025.

There is little chance that his current employers would consider letting him leave for a domestic rival, while his importance to City’s fortunes cannot be understated.

Although a move for De Bruyne would undoubtedly be nothing more than a pipe dream for Liverpool at present, Carragher is adamant that he would represent the best possible signing for the club in an ideal world.

However, he also suggested that Trent Alexander-Arnold’s development could suffer if he is stripped of his creative duties in the presence of the City playmaker.

“I think he’s one of the best players in the world,” said Carragher on a Sky Sports transfer special.

“Certainly in the last two or three years he’s been the best midfield player in the world.

“People always say Liverpool lack creativity in midfield. I think it’s a bit harsh because I think Liverpool get their creativity from different areas, it’s just the way the team’s set up.

“That midfield three, whoever it is, does a lot of work for the front three and for the full-backs. So, they’ve got a job to do and they do it really well.

“I just think that Kevin De Bruyne is absolutely sensational. I think in that right channel, maybe getting in the way of Trent I don’t know! But I’d say Kevin De Bruyne is the first one that springs to mind.”

Meanwhile, it remains to be seen whether Liverpool will make any new signings before the January transfer window slams shut in just six days’ time.

The Reds only bought one player over the summer, with Ibrahima Konate joining the club on a long-term basis from RB Leipzig for a fee in the region of £36million.

Liverpool opted to channel most of their resources into tying down a number of their existing stars during pre-season and it seems as though a similar approach has been taken in the mid-season market.

Their main priority appears to involve finalising a new deal for Mohamed Salah, who is yet to agree to an extension despite being locked in talks with the club’s hierarchy for a number of months.

Salah is only contracted to Liverpool until the end of next season and has been linked with a future move to either Real Madrid or Barcelona if he eventually decides to leave Anfield on a free transfer.

He is reportedly keen to stay at the club but has failed to accept any contract offers as of yet, with Liverpool still needing to do plenty of work in order to retain his services for the foreseeable future.
