Jamie Carragher has claimed in a scathing attack that Liverpool got ‘everything they deserved’ by losing to local rivals Everton at Anfield for the first time in the Premier League since 1999. Richarlison’s rapid-fire opener inside three minutes handed the Toffees an early advantage, before a late penalty from Gylfi Sigurdsson put the result beyond all doubt and condemned the hapless Reds to a fourth straight league defeat.
Liverpool looked up against it from the start after going a goal behind, and dominated proceedings in their search for a route back into the game, but were unsuccessful with Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, Georginio Wijnaldum all going close as the clock ticked down.
The result sees the Reds stay sixth in the Premier League table but level on points with seventh-placed Everton, who have the added benefit of a game in hand.
Klopp’s side now face a real battle to secure Champions League qualification for next season with 13 games to go until the end of the campaign.
Carragher, who played for Liverpool in their last defeat to the Toffees at Goodison Park in 2010, was left fuming by his former club’s inability to seal all three points.
He suggested that the Reds are leaning on Virgil van Dijk’s injury as an excuse for their poor recent performances, with the Dutch defender unlikely to return to first-team action before the conclusion of the season.

“Liverpool have been so poor,” said Carragher after the final whistle, co-commentating alongside Martin Tyler for Sky Sports.
“They have got everything they deserved. They can’t keep saying: ‘Virgil van Dijk is out’. I’m sick of saying it myself.”
Van Dijk is just one defender in a long line of absentees at the back for Liverpool, with Joel Matip and Joe Gomez also on the treatment table with long-term injuries.
However, it was the club’s inability to score that decided the result, with Klopp certain to be furious despite his side’s largely dominant performance.
Liverpool looked lethargic in attack for much of the game, and on the occasions they did trouble Everton stopper Jordan Pickford between the sticks he was more than equal to it, with the 26-year-old producing a brilliant performance to keep the defending Premier League champions at bay.
Wijnaldum, who tested the England goalkeeper with a fiercely-hit effort in stoppage time, echoed Carragher’s comments after the final whistle.
He claimed that he and his team-mates need to make the best of the situation they find themselves in before the prospect of a top-four finish slips out of their grasp.
“The first goal we conceded, we tried to keep possession when the long ball came instead of clearing it away,” he told Sky Sports, explaining the result.
“In the first couple of minutes you should take less risk, a pass through the defence and they scored. One more chance after that and we were the better team.
“Losing players during the season upset us a lot. We cannot play the victims, we have to deal with the situation and not feel sorry for ourselves.
“We have to give until the end of the season, it is painful and you could see if on the faces of the players. That is the situation we are in right now and we have to deal with it.
“Winning games in the Premier League is always difficult and the injuries don’t make it easier, we still have a squad who can change it around and we have to work harder to change it around.”
