Jadon Sancho will prove to be a better signing for Manchester United than Raphael Varane, according to Jamie Carragher. Varane is poised to become the second major signing of the summer for United this week after he completed the final stages of his long-awaited transfer from Real Madrid.
Varane completed his medical, posed for unveiling shots and spoke to club media on Wednesday and is expected to be officially unveiled on Thursday.
The £34m move, which could rise to £42m with add-ons according to BBC Sport, has been a long time coming for United, who tried to sign Varane in 2011 from Lens and in 2018 from Real Madrid.
Varane is yet to train with his new team-mates due to coronavirus restrictions but is expected to slot into the defence alongside captain Harry Maguire once fit.
Sancho, meanwhile, has been signed from Borussia Dortmund for £73m to bolster Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s attack.
The 21-year-old England international is seven years younger than Varane and former Liverpool defender Carragher believes he will prove to be the better signing over time.

“I actually think Sancho is a better signing for Man United in the long term,” he said on the UMM YouTube channel.
“I think Varane has been brilliant for Real Madrid next to [Sergio] Ramos.
“I think he’s just dropped his standards slightly over the last 18 months or so.
“He wasn’t at his best for France at [the European Championship]. That’s not to say he’s not a good player, sometimes you need a move and I think he needed that move.
“With him being 28, which is still young for a centre-back, I think the acquisition of Sancho is a really good signing.”

Varane will bring experience and clear pedigree to the United side, with the defender having won four Champions League titles with Real Madrid and the World Cup with France.
He will likely replace Victor Lindelof in Solskjaer’s starting line-up, but is not ready to face Leeds in the club’s opening Premier League fixture on Saturday.
Both Varane and Sancho were missing from the side which beat Everton 4-0 in their final pre-season match on Saturday, but could be on the bench this weekend, all being well.
“They still haven’t trained with us, and I need to see how they are,” Solskjaer told ESPN last week before the Everton friendly.
“I can’t see them being available for Everton [this weekend], but hopefully they will be ready to be on the bench [against Leeds].”
