Gary Neville has hailed the huge technical and tactical improvements of Premier League players after Jamie Carragher heaped praise on Brighton’s Adam Webster.
Carragher singled out centre half Webster for his influential role in Brighton’s 2-0 win over Watford in which the 26-year-old displayed his defensive qualities but also in possession through his passing and ability to drive forward with the ball from the back to support the Seagulls attack.
Speaking on Monday Night Football, Carragher said: ‘Adam Webster really stuck out for me. All the back players – I actually think Lewis Dunk is underrated in terms of him on the ball as well – they can play.

Carragher (L) and Gary Neville (R) spoke about technical improvement in the Premier League
‘They have to play from the back if they want to play for this [Brighton] team. Most centre backs now, coming through or playing in the Premier League you have to be good on the ball and that was a real standout in the game, that’s what stood out for me.’
Webster joined Brighton from Bristol City for £22m two years ago, was rewarded for his form with a new five-year contract during the summer and has also been tipped for an England call-up.
Following Carragher’s highlighting of Webster, fellow pundit Neville said: ‘We used to talk about the Premier League being technically and tactically less sophisticated than other leagues but that’s completely changed. These players, honestly, on the ball technically are so gifted.
On Monday night Carragher hailed Webster and also his Brighton team-mate Lewis Dunk
‘Tactically, their understanding of the game and the way in which the top managers in the world that we’ve got in this league want them to play they pick it up straight away.
‘This idea that we couldn’t tell English players, you couldn’t tell players that play in the Premier League, how to play [or that] we have to be more physical and direct, it’s absolutely turned on its head this last five or 10 years.
‘Absolutely unbelievable the way since Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola all these great managers have come into the Premier League, it’s a different league now.’
