Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher has posted to social media to gloat after Manchester United confirmed that Cristiano Ronaldo would be leaving the club “with immediate effect.” Carragher has recently spoken out against Ronaldo following the player’s bombshell interview with Piers Morgan.
Ronaldo returned to Old Trafford for a second spell last summer after the Red Devils signed him from Juventus. But he has endured a miserable campaign under Erik ten Hag this time around and has often found himself named on the bench for United’s Premier League matches.
And things came to a head just days before the start of the World Cup as Ronaldo told Morgan he felt “betrayed” by the Red Devils and had “no respect” for Ten Hag.
Carragher was angry with Ronaldo’s comments and told Sky Sports last week that United should “sack him.” And following the player’s departure on Tuesday, Carragher took to Twitter to post a GIF of Ricky Gervais’s creation David Brent looking smug as the ex-defender paid homage to his recent interview.

“I think they should just sack him or move him on,” Carragher said last week. “Whether that is giving him a free transfer because at the moment they are trying to build something – that is not ready to win the Premier League or the Champions League right now – but they’ve got a manager who in the next two or three years is going to want to push for those honours.
“And Ronaldo is not going to be around. And he’s going to be a distraction. This is not going to go away. And as soon as a player comes out and says he doesn’t respect the manager, I mean how is that going to work at the start of the season again after the World Cup? So it can’t work going forward.”

There has been a deluge of speculation around Ronaldo’s future ever since his interview with Morgan was screened. And on Tuesday, United released a statement which read: “Cristiano Ronaldo is to leave Manchester United by mutual agreement, with immediate effect. The club thanks him for his immense contribution across two spells at Old Trafford.”
And Ronaldo also released his own statement as he explained: “Following conversations with Manchester United we have mutually agreed to end our contract early. I love Manchester United and I love the fans, that will never ever change. However, it feels like the right time for me to seek a new challenge. I wish the team every success for the remainder of the season and for the future.”
