Jamie Carragher gives Arsenal fresh title hope with Man City claim

Jamie Carragher has offered Arsenal fresh hope of winning the Premier League title. The Liverpool legend reckons Manchester City could take their eye off the ball when it gets to the latter stages of the season.

Arsenal suffered a blow to their title hopes on Sunday. Mikel Arteta’s side drew 2-2 against Liverpool at Anfield after initially taking a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus.

Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino continued their fine record against the Gunners by each scoring to clinch a point for the hosts. Arsenal are six points clear of second-placed City but Pep Guardiola’s side have a game in hand.

Both teams know the title will be theirs if they win their remaining league matches this season. But City are also in the latter stages of the Champions League and FA Cup.

They play Bayern Munich in the first leg of their quarter-final this week and face Brighton in the FA Cup semi-final later this month. Carragher says Guardiola will have to rotate his team at some point in the quest for a treble, which could open the door for Arsenal.

He said on Sky Sports: “We keep talking about the title, City can do the treble. There’s a great chance they’ll be in the FA Cup final, they’re favourites for the Champions League and I think on the run-in if they keep going, there will be one or two games that Pep Guardiola has got to think about winning the treble and he’ll have to take a chance in a couple of league games with the team he picks.

“It might not be his best team but he’s got to think he’s just got to go with it because he’s got a game midweek and the bigger picture is always too important than just a one-off league game.”

City are looking to go one step further this season and win the Champions League for the first time after losing in the final two years ago. However, former City defender Micah Richards believes the Premier League remains the most important trophy for his old club.

Asked if the Champions League will be a distraction, Richards said: “Maybe, but just from being in the city and knowing how they think, they always talk about the league being the most important. You can say I’m lying, I’m not lying.

“The Champions League’s a bonus. I think I don’t like the way everyone talks about it, saying Man City haven’t won the Champions League so of course, they’ve tried to win it every single time – they’ve been to a final and lost.

“I think they’re just going for everything. With the squad that they have, the manager that they have, they are going for absolutely every competition and they won’t get distracted because they’ve got top-quality players.”
