Jadon Sancho top of Man Utd transfer shortlist with £80m summer bid eyed
Manchester United are determined to make Jadon Sancho their major signing of the summer.
The Borussia Dortmund winger has been on United’s radar for 18 months but a £100milion asking-price, allied to the German club’s reluctance to sell, stopped the move happening in the previous two windows.
Yet, though injury has hampered Sancho’s progress this term, Reds boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer remains a big admirer.
And that means the England international tops the list of possible big-money arrivals at Old Trafford ahead of the 2021-22 campaign.
United would still love to land Sancho’s Borussia team-mate – Norwegian hitman Erling Haaland.
However, securing an authentic winger in Sancho, 21, is the priority with the Reds increasingly optimistic Edinson Cavani will agree a new one-year deal.
The Uruguayan striker, 34, has been in superb form lately – and is no longer expected to finish his career with a free transfer to Argentina and Boca Juniors.
With Haaland’s price likely to hit £150m – amid interest from Man City, Real Madrid, Barcelona as well as United – acquiring Sancho for around half that is the more attractive proposition.
United believe the fee for ex-Man City trainee will be close to £80m – a significant drop on what he would have cost a year ago.
While the Europa League finalists have several forwards who can operate on the flanks, such as Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood and Anthony Martial, they are not outright wingers.
Only Wales’ Dan James fits that criteria but has yet to convince manager Solskjaer he is the long-term answer.
