Jack Wilshere ‘would love’ to sign for Newcastle if Eddie Howe becomes manager

Jack Wilshere admits he would "love" to sign for Newcastle if Eddie Howe takes over as manager – but he isn't sure if the former Bournemouth boss would sign him.

Howe is one of several coaches to have been linked with the Magpies post following Steve Bruce's departure this week.

The 43-year-old has been out of work since leaving Bournemouth last year, whom he guided from League One up to the Premier League.

And Wilshere, who is on the hunt for a new club himself after being released by Bournemouth earlier this year, believes his former manager would be a great fit at St James' Park.

When asked on talkSPORT if he would like to join Howe at Newcastle, the former Arsenal star said: “I would love to. I’m not sure if he would take me though.

“I worked with him before and I still speak with him so I could ask the question.

“I think he’d be great with the players Newcastle have got. With the transition they’re in, he could take them to the next level.”

Howe worked wonders in his time at Bournemouth, turning the club from a League One outfit to an established Premier League side in just three seasons.

From the outside the ex-Cherries gaffer comes across as a mellow coach who may lack the ruthless edge required to cut it at a top club.

However, Wilshere insists there is a different side to Howe behind the scenes.

"Eddie Howe used to lose it a little. You knew when you didn’t perform right for him," he added.

“He was a great coach, he had the respect of the players and everyone listened to him but sometimes he would lose it.

“After my first game for Bournemouth, we played City away and we got smashed 5-1.

“I gave the ball away a few times and came in at the end of the game, it was the first game for a while, and he just said ‘Jack, what are you doing? We brought you here to keep the ball, not give it away’ in front of everyone.

“He was angry and from that moment I knew what I had to do for him.”
