Jack Grealish has admitted that life at Manchester City is tougher than he thought it would be. It comes after Pep Guardiola was warned that the former Aston Villa man could ask for a transfer to Barcelona.
City star Grealish has insisted he has much more to give after a difficult start to life at the Etihad.
The England international became the most expensive transfer the Premier League has ever seen after a £100m move from Aston Villa in the summer.
After leaving the Villans after 20 years at the club, expectations have been high for Grealish.
But the 26-year-old has scored just twice in 15 appearances and was even dropped against Newcastle after being reprimanded by Guardiola over his behaviour.
The Catalan coach left him and Phil Foden out after pictures emerged of the two leaving a nightclub and Grealish has insisted life is tougher at City than he expected.
“I’ve done okay so far,” he told Sky Sports. “I’ve got so much more to give. It’s been so much more difficult than I thought it was going to be.
“I’m still learning and adapting. I’ve heard some people take a year to adapt here so maybe it will be the same for me. I want to score more and set up more goals next year.
“Having a £100m price tag means when you are going through a dry patch people ask if you are worth the money – where are his goals, where are his assists?
“I understand that, but I have to see it as a privilege that the club wanted to spend that much money on me and I hope I can repay them with goals and trophies.
“Playing in the Champions League is completely different to the Premier League – I had never played in Europe before, and I really wanted to.
“It’s unbelievable to hear the Champions League anthem, it makes you pinch yourself. It’s one trophy the players here really want to win.”
It comes after talkSPORT host and former Manchester United star Alan Brazil told Guardiola that Grealish could find better fortune with Barcelona should he keep throwing the gauntlet at him.
“What if Grealish and Foden said ‘fine, we don’t think we’ve done too much wrong, we’re off, end of the season, we’re off’,” Brazil told talkSPORT.
“The point I’m trying to make is that we don’t know how bad it was or if it was much ado about nothing.
“What I do know is that they are two great young players and that would be a huge blow if City were to lose them.
“Two top young players. Suddenly they go to Barcelona or to Real Madrid. Barcelona’s pedigree is way, way, way above Manchester City.”
Despite Grealish’s tough start, it has not stopped City dominating in the first half of the season.
They look on course to defend their Premier League title, though Liverpool and Chelsea will have plenty to say about that before the campaign ends, and they sit three points clear at the top of the table.
Grealish added: “I came here to City to try and win trophies. That’s what you look at when your career ends – trophies and medals.
“Losing out with England has made me want to win trophies with City even more.
“We are playing some brilliant football at the moment and we are giving ourselves a really good chance of going on and winning a few trophies. That’s why I came here.”
