Jack Butland claimed in 2017 he would 'never move to be a No 2'

You sure about that Jack? Man United’s new goalkeeper Butland is left red-faced after his now-deleted tweet from 2017 resurfaces claiming he would ‘NEVER move to be a No 2’ – with the former England star set to provide back-up to David de Gea

A now-deleted tweet from 2017 has come back to haunt Jack Butland after he completed his loan move to Manchester United, despite previously claiming he would never be happy being a back-up goalkeeper.

Butland has joined United from Crystal Palace until the end of the season, and he looks set to be David de Gea’s understudy during this period.

But six years ago, he was asked on Twitter whether he would consider a move to Old Trafford to play second fiddle to the Spanish shot-stopper.

Butland responded: ‘Would never move to be a number 2!’

The 29-year-old’s reply has since been deleted, but it has resurfaced following his switch to the red side of Manchester.

Butland was once seen as the future of English goalkeeping, and made his international debut as a teenager in 2012.

He has just nine caps to his name, though, and has not played for the Three Lions since 2018.

His game time at club level has also been limited in recent years, as he has made just 10 league appearances for Palace since joining the club from Stoke in October 2020.

He has not played a single minute this term for Patrick Vieira’s men, with Vicente Guaita being preferred.

Having hardly played at Selhurst Park over the last two years, it is hard to see Butland displacing Butland any time soon, suggesting that he has changed his stance since 2017 on his role within a squad.
