Ivan Toney’s has sent a message of intent to England manager Gareth Southgate after not being selected for the World Cup with a man-of-the-match performance in Sunday’s 1-2 win over Man City.

Toney scored both goals as Brentford stunned top-of-the-table chasers Man City with a brilliant Etihad outing as the visitors scored late to inflict a destabilising defeat on Pep Guardiola’s side.

Following the match, former Man United and Three Lions defender Rio Ferdinand praised Brentford’s ‘dynamic’ approach on their way to victory over the Premier League champions.

‘What a result. A lot of teams come here and get penned back but if you’ve got the right profile of players who are dynamic enough to be resilient at the back and be a threat you have a chance, said Ferdinand.

‘It’s not just about Toney, all of these players had to perform.’

Fellow pundit and ex-England striker Peter Crouch echoed similar statements as he labelled the Brentford goalscorer as the ‘best player on the pitch’ in Saturday’s top-flight clash.

‘Toney was the best player on the pitch. He held the ball up well. It was a great reaction. Thomas Frank will be pinging down those slopes.’
