Ivan Toney offered an insight into his penalty technique after notching another ice-cool spotkick for Brentford.

The former Newcastle United striker bagged himself a wonderful brace to give the Bees a comfortable 2-0 victory over Brighton and Hove Albion. It was another brilliant performance, which will surely give England manager Gareth Southgate plenty of food for thought, heading into the World Cup.

While his first goal was a truly wonderful and instinctive backheel flick, Toney stepped up to sweep home the 26th penalty of his footballing career. And considering England’s penalty woes, and the fact that scars left from the Euro 2020 final penalty shootout heartbreak may still linger heading into the World Cup, Toney’s coolness from 12 yards will be a timely reminder to Southgate.

And if the Three Lions’ boss wants to know how the Brentford striker is so lethal from the spotkick, all he has to do is watch Toney’s interview with Gary Neville. “To be honest, I don’t even know where I am going,” Toney began when asked about his penalty taking technique on Sky Sports News.

“Obviously, the keeper tried to give it the talk. He was trying to get into my head.

“But I just walked away and composed myself. I think of different things.

“I think of being on the beach with a cocktail and put it in the back of the goal.” Toney takes a very short warm up and almost strolls to the ball as he prepares to strike it.

His eyes remain fixed on the goalkeeper, waiting for any slight movements from an often jittery and indecisive shot stopper between the net. And when the opposing goalkeeper makes his move, Toney simply slots the ball in the opposing corner.

While the likes of Chelsea midfielder Jorginho have sometimes encountered problems with a unique penalty taking technique, Toney’s stylistic approach is yet to be beaten. Maybe we will all see it in Qatar, come November.
