‘It’s coming Rome’ swipe ruins England all over again

As the dust settled on Italy’s Euro 2020 victory, the world was quick to react to the result.

It appeared the eye of the football world were on Wembley as Italy ended its own 53-year Euro drought in a 3-2 shootout win — and extended England 55-years without silverware in a major tournament.

Following a 2-1 win over Denmark in the semi-final, the expectation was high for England with the statement “Fooball’s coming home” or “It’s coming home” spreading like wildfire.

Within 90 minutes of silverware for the first time since the 1966 World Cup victory, fans were even trying to look for hidden messages from the Queen, believing it was their destiny to end the drought.

But after 90 minutes, 30 minutes of extra-time and another failed penalty shootout, England’s wait has been extended further.

Vision of Italian defender Leonardo Bonucci screaming “It’s coming to Rome” into the camera quickly spread across the internet, and even the two nations’ postal carriers got in the act.

Last week, the Royal Mail posted a picture of a round parcel with “Home” written on it.

While many other fans were mercilessly mocking England with the phrase, both the Royal Mail and Poste Italiane had the same idea after the result in the final, post posting the same, but slightly different image of the “H” crossed out with an “R’ written above.

Unsurprisingly, England fans were furious that the Royal Mail wasn’t supporting the national team, while Italian fans were quick to praise the image.

It came after Italy wrecked England’s Euro 2020 party at Wembley on Sunday, winning a tense final on penalties to plunge the host nation into despair.

Roberto Mancini’s men recovered from the shock of conceding the quickest goal ever in a European Championship final to equalise and held their nerve to claim a 3-2 shootout victory after a 1-1 draw following extra-time.

It is the second time Italy have been crowned European champions and comes after the embarrassment of failing even to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Three players fluffed penalties for England, extending their poor record in shootouts and leaving the hosts waiting for another major trophy after the 1966 World Cup.

“We did well,” Mancini told RAI Sport. “We conceded a goal straight away and struggled, but then we dominated the game.

“The lads were wonderful, I don’t know what more to say. It’s important for all the people and all the fans. I hope they’re celebrating (in Italy).”

Italians spilled on to the streets from Milan to Palermo to celebrate their side’s triumph, pushing aside thoughts of the coronavirus pandemic which has gripped the nation.

Earlier, a partisan crowd of more than 67,000 mostly England fans at Wembley was whipped into a state of fever pitch by rousing renditions of “Three Lions” and “Sweet Caroline” before kick-off.

Gareth Southgate’s team raced out of the blocks and were ahead in just the second minute when defender Luke Shaw finished coolly at the back post after an inviting cross from Kieran Trippier.

Italy grew stronger as the match went on and equalised with 23 minutes remaining when Leonardo Bonucci scrambled the ball into the net from close range.
