Is this the end for Berisha?
Besart Berisha may have played his last A-League game after parting ways with Western United.
The best striker in the history of the competition is searching for a new club and hasn’t ruled out returning overseas.
In 236 A-League appearances for Brisbane Roar, Melbourne Victory and United, Berisha has scored 142 goals.
Last season was the leanest of his nine-year A-League career, with the Albania and Kosovo international scoring by his lofty standards a meagre total of seven goals in 23 appearances.
With Berisha’s United contact having expired, the club’s new coach John Aloisi made the decision not to offer the veteran attacker – who turns 36 on Thursday week – a new deal.
“Thank you Western United football club for those amazing two seasons!” Berisha posted on social media.
“It was a pleasure playing and scoring goals for you. I’d like to give a very special thank you to my teammates. It was great playing together with you.”
We would like to thank Besart Berisha for his hard work, dedication and loyalty to the Club. It has been an honour to watch and work with Besart and we wish him well in his future endeavours. ? pic.twitter.com/RrRXgpWeR5
Apart from his gluttony of goals, Berisha has also won two Golden Boots, four titles – two each with the Roar and the Victory – as well an FFA Cup with the Victory in 2015.
It’s understood more than one A-League club has expressed an interest in Berisha’s services, but the Roar isn’t among them.
However, Adelaide United coach Carl Veart hasn’t ruled out making a play for Berisha following Socceroo striker Tomi Juric’s move to Macarthur FC.
“Bes’s record speaks for itself, and we’re on the search for a No.9,” Veart said.
After spending time holidaying on the Gold Coast with his family, Berisha has returned to Melbourne and is training by himself.
