England supporters jeered off their team after the goalless draw with Scotland at Euro 2020 – and some have now taken to social media to criticise Gareth Southgate’s changes during the clash.
The two historic rivals played out a dire stalemate at Wembley in Group D, and sections of the crowd took exception to the performance by making their feelings known at full-time.
Frustration mounted around the ground and was partly targeted at the Three Lions’ changes, which saw Phil Foden taken off for Jack Grealish and Harry Kane removed, and the hesitancy over rolling the dice again late on.
England fans have criticised Gareth Southgate’s substitutes in the stalemate with Scotland
Grealish’s introduction was long-awaited, but even the Aston Villa talisman was unable to provide the spark to shake England out of their malaise. Confusion was also raised over Foden being replaced.
Manchester City starlet Foden staked his claim as one of the home team’s best players on the night, and a large number of Twitter users agreed that sacrificing the tricky midfielder was a mistake.
One responded to Grealish being brought on with a thumbs up emoji, but then added: ‘Foden is the wrong sub!’
Southgate chose to take off Phil Foden, a decision which has since been savaged on Twitter
A second person said they were ‘shocked’ by the change, posting: ‘Foden easily England’s best player, he’s on the only one that looks capeable of doing anything right (sic).’
‘Now why sub out Foden when it should be (Raheem) Sterling?’ a third said, accompanying the tweet with a face palm.
Captain Kane endured another quiet game at the tournament, and found himself removed from the firing line for the second consecutive game.
Supporters have since argued that the substitution, which saw Marcus Rashford brought on, should have been made earlier than the 74th minute – and the misfiring ace was accused of being a ‘passenger’.
‘Scotland deserved that result,’ said a Three Lions fanatic. ‘Love Harry Kane, but he offered little in the final third. Should have taken him off much sooner. And should have replaced Sterling, not Foden. No fluidity or purpose in attack.’
Harry Kane was also taken off after a poor display, and fans say it should have happened earlier
Another said: ‘So why did he call (Dominic) Calvert-Lewin if he’s gonna sub off Kane for Rashford?’
And a sixth user added: ‘Kane and Sterling are passengers in this game. Kane is too slow and Sterling is a yard off. I would give them 10/15 mins then double sub for Calvert-Lewin and Grealish.’
In a surprise move, Jadon Sancho was left on the bench despite the scores being locked level, with the Borussia Dortmund forward having made the squad after missing out altogether against Croatia.
The demand for him to be thrown into the fray was high with England toiling away in front of goal, and one particularly irked fan believes that Southgate’s poor choices mean he should leave at the end of the showpiece.
‘Southgate needs to go after this tournament,’ the supporter said. ‘Not using all subs available yet again, as he always does. We’ve got Sancho on the bench doing nothing. We need creative players.
A number of particularly angry supporters have demanded Southgate leave after Euro 2020
‘Whatever is going on with Kane, he needs to clear his head and focus. Or don’t start him.’
Jamie Carragher has pinned the blame for the Three Lions’ struggles on their attacking system.
The former international believes that Southgate’s game plan is not having the desired effect, despite his reshuffle at full back.
Writing in The Telegraph, he said: ‘I expressed my concerns about Harry Kane in my column after the first game.
Jack Grealish made his long-awaited first Euros appearance but couldn’t fashion out a winner
‘I suspect the points I made after the Croatia win will be raised by a few others over the next few days.
‘It’s a worry that England are not having enough shots on goal, or creating chances.
‘The attacking system is not functioning as it needs to, even with the addition of two attacking full-backs.’
