Inside Ronaldo’s woeful record vs Chelsea with Man Utd hoping he can end jinx
Cristiano Ronaldo is used to scoring goals – he’s done it against just about every team he’s ever come across.
The Portuguese superstar presents an aura of invincibility on the pitch and that portrayal is generally well-founded.
He has scored 684 goals in 909 club appearances and 799 times in 1,095 games altogether – an astounding record for any player, let alone one who began his career as a winger.
But there is one club who is Ronaldo’s kryptonite: Chelsea.
Ronaldo has played against Chelsea 15 times during his career, but has only scored once.
The only goal he has scored came in the 2008 Champions League final, which finished 1-1 before United won on penalties.
To make matters worse, Ronaldo was the only Manchester United player to miss his penalty out of the seven players that took one that night.
Ronaldo has played for United, Real Madrid and Juventus yet has only won five times against Chelsea, with four draws and six defeats.
United’s hierarchy may be concerned, considering they play league leaders Chelsea on Sunday.
Ronaldo is the team’s top goal scorer this season, with 10 in 15 games across all competitions – four ahead of Bruno Fernandes and Mason Greenwood.
But they may not be able to count on him tomorrow, considering he has failed to score in his previous 10 Premier League matches against the Blues.

The 36-year-old has a poor league record against Chelsea. He has won three, drawn three and lost four of his 10 top-flight outings against them.
Those games contain just two assists, which came way back during the 2005/06 and 2008/09 seasons.
That record is in stark contrast to other high-profile opponents.
Ronaldo has scored 25 times in 35 games against favourite opponents Atletico Madrid, while he also has 20 goals in 34 matches versus Barcelona.
He is known as a big-game player and that is reflected by the fact he has netted 10 times in seven games against his former side Juventus and nine times in eight games against Bayern Munich.
United will be desperate for Ronaldo to come good on Sunday, given it is likely to be Michael Carrick’s final game in charge of the club.
The former midfielder will take charge of his second game in a week for United after picking up a 2-0 win against Villarreal on Tuesday night.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked on Sunday following the 4-1 defeat by Watford – and the club are now close to appointing his full-time replacement.
Ralf Rangnick is poised to become United’s interim head coach after agreeing a six-month deal until the end of May following a breakthrough in talks on Thursday.

The 63-year-old German is currently the head of sports and development at Lokomotiv Moscow, but an exit to become Solskjaer’s successor at Old Trafford is not expected to be an issue.
Rangnick’s arrival will prompt a change in Ronaldo’s playing style, given he is known as the godfather of gegenpressing.
Ronaldo has been fairly prolific in front of goal during his second spell at the club, but a perceived lack of work rate has been criticised by pundits and fans alike.
Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea side are unlikely to be generous hosts, considering they have conceded just four goals in 12 Premier League games so far this season.
Chelsea are 12 points ahead of United in the Premier League and have been in fantastic form.
That is in stark contrast to United, who have lost five of their last seven league matches ahead of Rangnick’s arrival.
