Ian Wright furious with Arteta tactics as Arsenal throw away Europa League win
Ian Wright took to Twitter to vent his fury after Arsenal threw away a win against Slavia Prague in the Europa League on Thursday night.
"Take the chances! Make the subs earlier! Finish the tie," tweeted Arsenal favourite Wright, alongside an angry face emoji, shortly after the final whistle sounded at the Emirates.
Wright was referring to Mikel Arteta waiting until the final quarter of an hour of the match before making four substitutions all at once.
The changes had an instant impact on the match with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Nicolas Pepe causing the Slavia Prague defence all sorts of problems.
Eventually, the Gunners found a breakthrough when Aubameyang picked out Pepe to slot home.
The goal, coming four minutes before the end, appeared enough for Arsenal to take a lead with them to the Czech Republic for the second leg of the quarter-final.
But poor defending saw Tomas Holes equalise with a header in stoppage time.
When asked if he should have made the substitutions sooner on BT Sport, Arteta replied: "We knew that we have the possibility to change things with the five subs.
"We believed it was the right time for the setup that they had. It was the right moment to do it and they had a big impact.
"In this competition, the subs have a lot to say. They made the impact that we need, but unfortunately, we didn't capitalise at the end with the result that we wanted."
