Arsenal icon Ian Wright has agreed with FIFA president Gianni Infantino after he urged Europeans against criticising Qatar for the treatment of migrant workers who built the stadiums and infrastructure for the 2022 World Cup. Infantino addressed the world with an hour-long press conference on Sunday, which included bizarre comments as he defended the tournament hosts.
The 52-year-old ruffled feathers by stating: “Today I feel Qatari. Today I feel Arabic. Today I feel African. Today I feel gay. Today I feel disabled. Today I feel like a migrant worker.”
He also aimed a dig at his European critics… “I think for what we Europeans have been doing the last 3,000 years, we should be apologising for the next 3,000 years before starting to give moral lessons to people,” Infantino insisted.
But while many have accused Infantino of losing the plot in a bid to remain on Qatar’s good side, Wright has sided with part of his argument. Appearing on ITV ahead of England’s Group B opener against Iran on Monday, he was clearly emotional as he discussed how the Gulf state’s issues draw comparisons to past occurrences in the UK.

He said: “Then I think about it, and I have to think about back home in my own country, you think about the Windrush generation and the fact that 80 per cent of them were not being paid and people have died waiting. When you are pointing the finger, you are pointing three at yourself, but at the same time, all you want for these people is for them to be compensated and get the justice they deserve.”
However, Wright admitted that he was ‘very conflicted’ about the World Cup, knowing workers died while building the stadiums to showcase the tournament. “[I feel] very conflicted if I am being totally honest. When I got to the airport on Saturday, seeing the fans singing, you start to feel what is going to happen.

“Then you simply have to stop yourself because you know what has happened. You’ve seen the cities and how quickly they went up, and you know that people have died building those stadiums. Then you think of the families, lives destroyed, families destroyed, and then you think of the compensation, the lack of commitment towards the victims.”
England begin their 2022 World Cup journey at the 45,000-capacity Khalifa International Stadium before facing the USA and Wales to complete the group stage. Gareth Southgate and Co. are battling against more than their opposition off the pitch as they seek to make history on it in the Middle East.
