Gianluigi Buffon has called missing out on £8.8million the 'biggest mistake of his life' after winning 10 league titles with Juventus and the World Cup with Italy.

Having spent 17 seasons with The Old Lady and picked up 10 Serie A titles as well as 11 domestic cups, Buffon joined PSG in 2018/19 with the option of a further year.

Having made only 17 league starts in their title-winning campaign, the veteran decided to return to Juventus but quickly regretted that move – as well as the wages he missed out on.

While on a Twitch stream with former Italy colleague Christian Vieri, Buffon divulged: "Leaving was the biggest mistake of my life, I gave up €10million (£8.8m).

"They told me that [Alphonse] Areola would play in the Champions League and I didn't accept it. For me, the one who deserves it plays. That's why I returned to Juve.

"Then I regretted it, because Areola was injured and they signed Keylor Navas in his place!

"[Paris] was the most beautiful experience of my life. I felt like a free man. I quickly learned French, talked to people on the street, visited museums… I had the feeling of playing in a great team."

Now 45, Buffon spent two seasons back at Juventus before returning to another former club in Parma, who sit mid-table in Serie B.

With the 2006 World Cup winner planning to retire after next season, he named his biggest dissapointment on the pitch being Manchester United's last gasp win over PSG in 2020.

Buffon, who lost in three Champions League finals without winning the tournament, said: "I was convinced, we were superior.

"We went to Manchester to play the first leg of the round of 16 with United and we dominated, but they eliminated us in the second leg.

"That was the biggest disappointment of my career."
