You would do well to ever pull the wool over Sir Alex Ferguson's eyes at Manchester United.

From his trusted confidantes to contacts around town, there was little Fergie didn't know about his own players – particularly if they had been out for a night on the tiles.

While his senior stars would perhaps be given a little more leeway on post-match celebrations, the legendary Scottish manager was known to come down hard on any cocky academy youngsters getting ideas above their station.

So it should come as little surprise Daniel Nardiello was the victim of the infamous hairdryer treatment after a heavy night of boozing involving a "Wes Brown special".

The former striker was once a fledgling talent on United's books with that valuable penchant for finding the back of the net. While he only went on to make four senior appearances in the Red Devils' first team, Nardiello carried plenty of promise after an early outing for the club's reserves.

As he recalled to the Undr The Cosh podcast, Nardiello said: "I remember one time, I've played for the reserves at [aged] 16, 17 because they were short on players. A friendly game, come on, 20 minutes and scored a goal.

"Got back to my digs and they [my fellow academy teammates] said, 'You scored a goal, go out and celebrate. You've done really well, go out.'"

Nardiello then explained how, while out under the bright lights of Manchester's city centre, a few drinks deep, he and a friend bumped into none other than United defender Wes Brown, who was with striker David Healy in a bar called Piccadilly 21s.

Brown, who went on to win the Champions League with United among numerous major honours, decided to up the ante with the club's academy undergraduate. "He's pulled us in and given us what he's called a Wes Brown special. It was a triple gin, a triple whiskey and a triple vodka. He made us down all three."

But while it may or may not have seemed a good idea at the time, sure enough, news made its way back to United's manager.

“Anyway, Monday morning comes along and we're in the office with Fergie and Neil Bailey and stuff. He [Fergie] said, 'If you ever go out in Manchester again, you'll be sacked from the club, you'll leave the club.'

"So God knows how he found out – Wes could have grassed on us, I suppose, I dunno? Filled us with alcohol then Monday morning…"

Fergie's warning appeared to have an impact, as Nardiello added: "Genuinely, he had his spies in Manchester. It was known if we ever went out in Manchester.

"That was my first ever experience of it. In digs, I never went out like that again because you knew it was getting back and you didn't want to get in s*** with the gaffer and Neil Bailey and the youth team guys as well."
