- Hungary are in second place, dropping points only in a 3-3 draw against Poland
England return for the first time since their Euro 2020 heartache as they resume their World Cup 2022 qualifying bid against Hungary on Thursday night.
The Three Lions showed continued improvement under Gareth Southgate at this summer’s championships, losing only on penalties to Italy in the final at Wembley.
Having reached the semi-finals of the World Cup back in 2018, the progression is clear, and England can take another step towards Qatar with victory on Thursday, in what would be their fourth in as many qualifying outings.
Hungary proved at Euro 2020 that they are no slouches, however, despite failing to progress beyond the group stages.
Drafted into the ‘Group of Death’ alongside France, Portugal and Germany, they were beaten just once – with only an 84th-minute equaliser by the latter eventually knocking them out.
With a 100 per cent record so far, it’s England who sit top of Group I in the World Cup qualifiers, with Hungary the current runners-up, having dropped points in their 3-3 draw with Poland.

Team news
England could be without Jadon Sancho for Thursday night’s match-up, after Southgate revealed on Wednesday that the forward has picked up a knock.
The winger has featured in all three of Manchester United’s Premier League matches so far this season, having signed from Borussia Dortmund in a stunning £73million move.
Southgate confirmed that the rest of his squad are all fit, though they did lose Dominic Calvert-Lewin last weekend during Everton’s win over Brighton on Saturday.
