Huddersfield 2-0 Hull: Helik header inspires Terriers win
Huddersfield 2-0 Hull: Mark Fotheringham picks up three points in his first home game as Terriers boss thanks to Michael Helik’s first half header and a Lewie Coyle own goal
- Hull captain opened the scoring for Huddersfield with a first half own goal
- Michael Helik then doubled the lead with a header before the break
- Despite the result, Huddersfield remain stranded in the relegation zone
- Terriers boss Mark Fotheringham made it clear he is ‘not here to be their friends’
Jurgen Klinsmann and Felix Magath feature prominently in Mark Fotheringham’s bulging contacts book and the fiery Scot showed here why Huddersfield handed him the task of reviving their fortunes.
After Danny Schofield’s disastrous short reign was brought to an abrupt end, last season’s beaten Championship play-off finalists turned to Fotheringham.
The 38-year-old has coached in Germany and Scotland, most recently as Magath’s assistant at Hertha Berlin, and a maiden victory in his first home game illustrated the desire flooding through his veins.
Michael Helik topped an impressive performance for Huddersfield by scoring a header
It helped Mark Fotheringham pick up a win in his first home game in charge of the Terriers
Huddersfield took the lead when Hull captain Lewie Coyle headed into his own net in the 29th minute, before the outstanding Michal Helik nodded in a second after the break.
Fotheringham said afterwards: ‘I have to make it clear, I need to train these players day in and day out to make them better.
‘I need to challenge them and make the whole environment more competitive.
‘I’m not here to be their friends — I’m paid to win games and that’s why I’m passionate.’
Andy Dawson’s Hull had a poor afternoon and not sit just two points above the relegation zone
Huddersfield remain in the relegation zone but should continue to rise under Fotheringham, while Hull remain perilously positioned in 20th.
The Tigers axed Shota Arveladze and Andy Dawson’s third game in interim charge saw his second defeat, with visiting fans aiming chants of ‘you’re not fit to wear the shirt’ at Ryan Longman.
Longman spurned a golden opportunity to score in the first half but Dawson commented afterwards: ‘He’s the first one to admit we should have come in 1-0 up but he has our full support.’
