Horror scenes as Ipswich fans confront players in away end after dismal display

There were horror scenes at the Valley as Ipswich Town fans confronted players in the away end after a dismal display against Charlton Athletic.

Ipswich fell to a 2-0 defeat against the Addicks on Tuesday night, with the hosts moving further away from the relegation zone and to within just a point of their opponents.

The travelling supporters have grown increasingly frustrated with their side's performances in recent weeks with the Tractor Boys winning just two of their last 10 matches.

Tuesday's defeat was the first match in charge for new interim manager John McGreal, who has stepped in to replace the sacked Paul Cook.

Goals from Jayden Stockley and Alex Gilbey sealed the win for Charlton, with Ipswich failing to muster a single shot on target during the match.

Cook was dismissed on Saturday following a goalless draw at home to League Two Barrow in the second round of the FA Cup.

As the Ipswich players approached the away end at the Valley to applaud their fans, several gathered at the front to let their feelings be known.

As two players got right to the front of the stand, several supporters jumped down to confront them, with one seen to push the players as tensions boiled over.

Objects also appeared to be thrown from the crowd as stewards and players arrived on the scene to cool the situation down.

Ipswich were one of the pre-season promotion favourites in League One following a busy summer which saw former boss Cook bring 21 new players to Portman Road.

However, they have struggled for form, failing to win any of their opening six league matches and have not occupied the top six once so far.

As a result, the stalemate with League Two strugglers Barrow proved to be the final straw for Cook, but fans remain angry with the players despite his departure.
