Hodgson’s attempt at controlling ball in dugout has football fans in stitches

Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson’s failed attempt to control a football received a huge cheer from the Eagles fans.

The 75-year-old attempted to bring down West Ham goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski’s wayward clearance in the first half of Palace’s home Premier League clash against the Irons.

The first half saw five goals after a delayed start to the game due to issues with season ticket scanning machines, but the action and Hodgson left plenty talking about the Premier League’s early kick off.

As the Premier League’s oldest manager’s touch sent the ball down the line, the former England manager was even applauded by his coaching staff behind him in the dugout.

BT Sport co-commentator Glenn Hoddle chuckled as replays of the gaffer’s first touch were shown on TV coverage, the former England international and Tottenham Hotspur hero quipped: “You’ve got to work on that first touch Roy.”

The infamous first touch was later shown during the half-time analysis, with pundit Peter Crouch saying: “It’s bounced off like a trampoline.”

Hodgson’s success in football has come through his management career rather than his playing one and it showed with his involvement on the sidelines. Hodgson played non-league football in Kent during his playing days before beginning his management journey in 1976.

But the Palace boss did receive support on social media, with one account tweeting: “Pretty awesome for someone that's almost 80 tbh.”

Another account commented: “It’s actually a lovely touch”. Whilst one more made a dig at the disastrous season Chelsea have been enduring, saying: “He's playing centre forward for Chelsea next week!”

Happily for Palace, Hodgson’s involvement wasn’t the only thing to cheer with the Eagles going in 3-2 up at half-time following a breathtaking first half from both sides, winning 4-3 in a seven goal thriller.

Hodgson’s return to Selhurst Park has been incredibly successful with the Eagles moving away from the relegation zone and heading towards safety yet again.
