Hoddle takes unnecessary dig at Spurs ace Romero during Real v Chelsea
Tottenham legend Glenn Hoddle took an unnecessary dig at Cristian Romero during coverage of Chelsea’s Champions League match at Real Madrid. The pundit singled out the Argentine despite Spurs not being in action.
Romero has been a regular for Tottenham this season after making his loan move permanent last August. He was part of the Argentina side that went all the way at the World Cup in December and beat France on penalties in the final.
However, his performances at club level have often led to criticism. Hoddle has previously spoken on the need for Romero to reevaluate his way of defending, especially when on a yellow card.
Spurs are not in action again until the weekend when they host Bournemouth in the Premier League. But that didn’t stop Hoddle from bringing up his former club in conversation.

Ahead of the quarter-final first leg between Real and Chelsea at the Bernabeu, Hoddle spoke about Brazilian centre-back Eder Militao. He said that the Real star had improved in some aspects of his game and claimed Romero should use him as inspiration, again highlighting a shortcoming in the Tottenham player’s game.
Hoddle said on BT Sport: “He’s aggressive but at the right time. Before he was going in blind, he was going down the legs of somebody – a little bit like Romero does at Tottenham.
“Romero’s got to play like Militao, he’s changed his game. He’s more patient and he’s just got those instincts as a defender, now he’s just seemed to have channelled them in the right way.”
Spurs were knocked out of the competition in the round of 16 against AC Milan. Romero was sent off for two bookable offences in the second leg in north London.

Hoddle criticised the 24-year-old at the time. He said: “Romero’s got to be looked at. We say it every week, he could be a wonderful defender but time and time again he gets sent off, he gets a second booking – he’s got to play differently then.”
It was Romero’s second red card of the season, both of which have resulted from being booked twice. Former Spurs midfielder Jermaine Jenas said during the Milan game that it was a weakness of his.
Jenas commented: “It’s a massive flaw to his game. We spoke about it after 15 minutes [when he received his first booking], I don’t understand why he has to do this all the time. He is such a top, top player, Cristian Romero, and he is so loved at this place.
“I think he is a brilliant, brilliant defender but this is a part of his game he needs to figure out.”
