'He's a joke' – Andy Cole stunned by Chelsea star's performance vs Real Madrid
Manchester United legend Andy Cole has branded N’Golo Kante a ‘joke’ following Chelsea’s Champions League semi-final win over Real Madrid and believes the midfielder was comfortably the man of the match across the two legs.
Kante was heavily involved in the build-up to both goals at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday evening, with Timo Werner and Mason Mount netting in each half to secure a 3-1 aggregate victory for the Blues.
The France World Cup winner was a constant threat with his energy and penetrative runs from deep and perhaps should have scored himself in the 66th minute while the tie was still firmly in the balance.
But Mount directed home Christian Pulisic’s cross with five minutes remaining to secure Chelsea’s place in an all-English final against Manchester City in Istanbul on May 29.

On Kante’s all-action display, ex-United and England striker Cole told Optus Sport: ‘He’s a joke. Seriously, he’s a joke. Watching Chelsea last night, both the goals have come from him breaking play up and slipping someone in.
‘People didn’t think he could do that but I think he’s proven he can do all that now. He’s in the right position because he’s cute enough to be in the right position.
‘He’s a top player and I don’t think he’s given the credit that he should be given.
‘In the first game against Real he was man of the match and, for me, last evening I thought he was man of the match as well.
‘I know people will talk about Mount and players like that but Kante last night was top, top drawer.’
Cole felt Kante’s lowkey reaction to Werner heading Chelsea in front was particularly telling of the Frenchman’s character.
‘He just wants to play football and do the best he can do for his team,’ he added.
‘He’s not into the razzmatazz of the modern day game, everyone seems to be into the razzmatazz, but if you look at him he puts his performances on the football pitch.
‘He didn’t even celebrate the first goal and he set it up. You’ve just gone 1-0 up in the Champions League semi-final and he’s not even celebrating.
‘He knows the game is just getting started.’
