Henry WON'T return as Belgium assistant boss after Tedesco appointment

Thierry Henry WON’T return to his role as Belgium’s No 2 following appointment of Domenico Tedesco, the country’s FA confirms… with the Arsenal legend ‘keen to return to management’ after failed interview to replace Roberto Martinez

  • Domenico Tedesco was appointed as Belgium boss, replacing Roberto Martinez
  • Former Belgium No.2 Thierry Henry was reportedly interested in taking the role
  • However, he wasn’t chosen and will now not return to his position as assistant

The Belgian FA have confirmed that Thierry Henry won’t return to his role as assistant manager following the appointment of Domenico Tedesco.

Tedesco was confirmed as Belgium’s new first-team manager earlier on Wednesday – replacing Roberto Martinez – who left his role following the Red Devils’ disastrous World Cup campaign.

It was confirmed on the national team website that Tedesco, 37, has signed a deal until after the 2024 Euros with the national side.

However, the CEO of the Belgian Football Federation Peter Bossaert revealed Henry wouldn’t be a part of his coaching staff.

The Arsenal legend had been linked with the position, but Belgium decided to go in a different direction – although Bossaert explained he did discuss the managerial role with the 45-year-old.

It comes after Italian coach Domenico Tedesco has been appointed as Belgium’s new boss

Henry had previously spent two spells as assistant manager after first being appointed to the role in August 2016.

He left to take charge of AS Monaco in 2018 but struggled at the Principality club, winning just five of his 20 games in charge before he was sacked.

Henry then spent just over a year in charge of Montreal CF in the MLS before he left that role in February 2021 for ‘family reasons’ and rejoined Martinez’s set-up as his assistant.

The pair oversaw a disastrous World Cup that saw them crash out in the group stage and despite possessing what has become known as their ‘Golden Generation’, they failed to win any silverware.

However, they did oversee a third place finish at the 2018 World Cup which is the country’s greatest achievement at the showpiece tournament.

After Martinez left his role, it raised questions about what would happen to Henry, particularly after his outlined his desire to return to management – according to Get Football News France – but he has now left the national set-up.

Belgium are next in action in March when they take on Germany and Sweden in qualifying games for the 2024 Euros.

Speaking to the Belgian FA after his appointment, Tedesco said: ‘For me it is a great honour to be the new head coach of Belgium.

‘I’m really looking forward to the task and I’m extremely motivated. I had a very good feeling right from the first conversation.’
