Henry and Bergkamp all smiles as Arsenal breeze past Man United

Arsenal invincibles Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp all smiles at the Emirates Stadium as they watch the Gunners boost their top four hopes by breezing past their old enemy Man United

It was 21 and a half years ago that Thierry Henry scored one of the best goals the Premier League has ever seen in Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Manchester United at Highbury.

The Frenchman was just outside the box and had his back to goal when he received the ball from Gilles Grimandi, but as he held off Denis Irwin, he flicked it up before swivelling and nonchalantly volleying it over Fabien Barthez’s head. Pure class.

This was Henry at his very best at a time when Arsenal and United were the powerhouse forces in English football. That season was to be the fourth in a row in which the two clubs finished first and second in the Premier League.

Memories of Henry’s stunning strike were evoked on Saturday afternoon as he was pictured in the stands as Arsenal once again hosted United. Alongside side him with a beaming grin was another Arsenal legend, Dennis Bergkamp. He had every reason to be smiling too as the Gunners secured a 3-1 victory over the Red Devils.

Of course the prize at stake has decreased in prestige – the two sides are currently fighting for a place in the top four rather than the league title – but with several exciting youngsters lighting up the pitch, Arsenal fans are increasingly hopeful of returning to their former glories.

Henry and Bergkamp were also snapped with the two most thrilling talents of the new generation – Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe – in a picture which the club’s Twitter account aptly captioned ‘The Arsenal. Today, tomorrow, forever.’

It is over 21 years since Henry’s stunning winning goal against United at Highbury

Saka and Smith Rowe both scored their 10th league goals of the season in the 4-2 win over Chelsea in midweek, becoming the first Arsenal players aged 21 or under to reach double figures in a Premier League campaign since Nicolas Anelka in 1999.

Saka got his 11th from the penalty spot in the win over United, as the Gunners took an important step towards securing Champions League qualification for the first time in six years.

The pair certainly have potential to reach legendary status in North London over the next decade, joining Bergkamp, Henry et al.
