Harry Redknapp says he got "lucky" when he woke up in hospital after 90mph crash
Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp said he was extremely “lucky” to survive a car crash that killed his best friend Brian Tiler and three Italian teenagers in 1990.
Redknapp and Tiler, who was the chief executive at Bournemouth at the time, were involved in a “head-on” collision the day after they watched Italy beat the Republic of Ireland in the 1990 World Cup. Tiler was pronounced dead at the scene, along with three Italian teenagers in the other car.
However, the 75-year-old miraculously survived the horrific collision, suffering a broken leg, a fractured skull, and many other injuries. And Redknapp candidly opened up about the life changing accident that he was "lucky" to come out the other side of.

“Italia 90 was a nightmare time, because I had a car accident,” Redknapp said to the ‘Pub Talk’ podcast. “Brian Tiler, who was the chief executive, my mate, and the captain of {Aston} Villa back in the day, we went out to watch the World Cup.
“We were staying in a hotel, and we got up in the morning and just come back. The night before, we went to watch the Republic of Ireland play Italy. We had a people carrier and we were driving back after the game and I stopped to talk to some Irish fans outside the stadium.
“Brian was going ‘come on Harry’ and we got on the minibus. On the way up there, I fell asleep, and there were three young kids overtaking doing 90mph. Everybody was drunk in Italy as the Italians had won that night, Rome was going crazy.
“We had this long drive back to a place called Cantina. On the way out of Rome, there was a dangerous road with three lanes, and they’ve overtook, doing 90mph and hit us head on. They were only 17-years of age, they all got killed and Bryan got killed.”
When asked if the tragedy changed his outlook on life, Redknapp instantly replied. “I woke up in hospital a couple of days later, not knowing what had happened. I was very lucky.
“You never know do you? You’ve got to enjoy your life.”
