Harry Redknapp open to ending managerial retirement if Leeds offer him top job

Harry Redknapp is reportedly open to coming out of retirement if Leeds offer him the manager's job.

Redknapp walked away from football management in 2017 after a year-long spell with Birmingham City. The 75-year-old helped the club survive relegation from the Championship in the 2016/17 campaign, but he was given the boot in the following season after leading the Blues to five defeats on the trot.

At the time, Redknapp ruled out a return to the dugout, saying in a chat with Sports Gazette: "My career’s gone. I’ve had a long spell managing. I’ve done roundabout 1500 games or something crazy. I don’t see myself going back into football.”

But it appears the former West Ham boss has had a change of heart with the Leeds job up for grabs, according to The Mirror. Leeds have been managerless since axing Jesse Marsch earlier this month, and Redknapp is considering coming to the rescue if the Whites contact him, it has been claimed.

And they may have no choice but to turn to Redknapp soon as their hunt for a new boss rumbles on. So far, the Whites have been unsuccessful in their bids to recruit Carlos Corberan, Rayo Vallecano tactician Andoni Iraola and Feyenoord's strategist Arne Slot.

The Elland Road outfit have been led by U21 coach Michael Skubala since Marsch's exit and he managed to guide them to a 2-2 draw against Manchester United nearly two weeks ago, although he was unable to repeat the feat when the sides met five days later, in the clash the Red Devils won 2-0.

Leeds announced that Skubala will remain in charge for their next two matches against fellow relegation battlers Everton and Southampton, who the Whites' former boss Marsch is poised to manage following the sacking of Nathan Jones.

But it's thought that Redknapp is more capable of helping Leeds retain their Premier League status following his illustrious spells with Tottenham, Portsmouth, and the Saints in the league.

Pompey fans will have fond memories of the man who saved them from relegation, and won them the FA Cup. He was also successful at Spurs who he guided into the Champions League, and if he's given the Leeds job, the club will hope he can rewind the clock and weave the same magic with them.
