Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire can copy Red Devils’ legend Nemanja Vidic by undertaking more training while he is out of the first team to save his career at Old Trafford. The England international has been badly off form during the last 12 months and has lost his place in Erik ten Hag’s starting XI in recent weeks to Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane.

Maguire started United’s first two games this season but was heavily criticised for his performances during the 2-1 opening day defeat to Brighton and the dire 4-0 loss away to Brentford. He was dropped following the disastrous result at the Gtech Community Stadium and is yet to regain his place in the Premier League, with his only starts coming in the Europa League and for England.

However, the 29-year-old could now follow the lead of former United skipper Vidic by undertaking more training in order to get himself back into the side. The anecdote was shared by former Old Trafford hero Patrice Evra who spoke about the time the Serbian asked Sir Alex Ferguson for time to put in more hours at Carrington during a run of poor form.

Speaking to Betfair the Frenchman said: “I remember Vidic wasn’t having great performances, he went to see Ferguson and said that he needs to train more because he wasn’t at his usual level, then he didn’t play a few games and Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling played.”

The 41-year-old, who made 379 appearances during an eight-year stint in the north-west, was discussing last weekend’s 6-3 humbling by Manchester City and insisted United players need to be ‘honest with themselves’ in front of the manager if they are to recover quickly to claim a Champions League spot by the end of the campaign.

“The players have to be honest with themselves, their teammates, the manager and say they were scared and they bottled it (vs City),” he explained. “They didn’t believe in the plan and they should admit it. Afterwards, the manager will know which players he can go to war with again.

“If nobody is honest with themselves after this game we are in big trouble. If they start to find excuses, I’ll be worried that we’ll be right back to where we were at the start of the season. It’s all about honesty. We are fighting for the top four, but we will have to fight for every ball.”
