Harry Kane woes continue as England ace can’t extend impressive four-year run

Harry Kane's incredible goalscoring run in England qualifying matches came to an end on Tuesday night – continuing his miserable start to the new season.

Kane, 28, was desperate to leave Tottenham over the summer and boost his chances of winning major trophies, only for Daniel Levy's £150million asking price to deter reported suitors Manchester City from making a bid.

The Spurs frontman has therefore been forced to stay put in north London this season, and the transfer saga seems to have affected his early-season form.

He is yet to get on the scoresheet in the Premier League this term, drawing blank in his first six outings under new boss Nuno Espirito Santo.

His only goals so far (6) have come in the Europa Conference League – against minnows Pacos Ferreira and NS Mura – and against Wolves in the Carabao Cup.

It has been a poor start to the 2021/22 season for Kane, and even his England form appears to be suffering.

He had found the back of the net in 15 consecutive qualifiers for England before the draw with Hungary, stretching all the way back to a clash with Slovakia in September 2017.

Southgate was forced to defend his captain after hooking him with the game still in the balance, insisting the decision was merely to get "fresh legs" on the pitch.

The England boss said: “I just think tonight we didn’t play as well as a team as we should and we can.

"In the end we need to refresh that and get fresh legs into the game. With any of the forward players there’s always a story when we take them off.
